Ruben Dias is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for the Premier League club Manchester City and also for the Portugal national team. He is currently counted among the best in the field and is known for his defensive prowess and aerial abilities. He started his career in Benfica’s Youth Academy and got promoted to the Senior division in 2017. In the earlier days of his life, he was not under any professional guidance and used to play on the streets or inside his house with his younger brother Ivan.

Raphael Xavier Varane is a French footballer who plays as a center-back for the Premier League club Manchester United is considered one of the finest defenders in this era and is widely appreciated for his defensive prowess and speed. Born in the city of Lille, he began his career at the local club AS Hellemmes when he was 7 years old. Varane was a very rapidly growing player in his youth days as he earned deserving spots in his youth career very quickly.

1: Personal Career

Varane was given a chance in the senior team after the arrival of the new manager in Lens. The young player gave his best debut to the team and was also named to the starting lineup. He played the complete match and also won which earned him a lot of respect and appreciation for his performance in the very first days of his career. Even after the arrival of a new manager he retained his position in the starting lineup and continued to do well.

After a good spell with Lens, it was confirmed by the Real Madrid president that his joining in club. He appeared as a half-time substitute in the very first match and he finished the pre-season campaign with a total of 8 matches played with the club. Real Madrid won against Rayo Vallecano by a dominating score of 6-2 and Varane’s goal created history as he became the youngest foreign player at the age of 18 years to score a goal in a competitive match for Real Madrid.

In the next season, he proved himself as one of the most important assets of the team as he performed exceptionally well defending some crucial goals and in the same season he again created history by becoming the second youngest foreign player to score for the club in a Clasico match. He was also named as one of the most performing foreign players in Real Madrid’s history. Varane also won the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League.

In the next season, he suffered a few injuries but still managed to appear a total of 23 times as the club won the La Liga title and also the UEFA Champions League. After an excellent and astonishing spell at Real Madrid, he was announced as the latest addition to the Manchester United lineup and was warmly welcomed by the fans and the club.

Ruben Dias was shown the way to the local club Estrela da Amadora by his relative and this is where he started his journey. He was moved to the Benfica youth academy where he was trained to be a midfielder until he was deployed as a center-back in the junior team. He performed exceptionally well on the junior side and helped the team bag the 4th position in the first season and also reached the final of the 2016-17 UEFA Youth League.

After making his debut in the senior team in 2017, he became one of the best players for the club and was also awarded the Primeira Liga’s Best Young Player of the Year. At the end of the season, the manager revealed that this would be his last season with Benfica and he would be departing soon.

On 15 September 2021, he also captained Manchester City for the very first time providing an assist in a 6-3 Champions League win.

In March 2022 it was announced that he had suffered a hamstring injury due to which he wouldn’t be playing for the next 2 months. This 2-month gap ruled him out of the Manchester Derby of the season and also the Portugal qualification playoff for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In 2022-23 he started and played almost every minute of the campaign winning the Champions League trophy and completing a continental treble.

Dias and Raphael both players are exceptionally well and have been performing for a very long time but there is a difference of 4 years between the players and to be fair we must consider their best stats to find out who has been a better player throughout.

Dias has played fewer matches as compared to Varane but still, he managed to score the same number of goals and two more assists as compared to Varane which is enough to prove Dias is a better opponent in this comparison.

After performing consistently when contributing majorly in the previous levels he was called up for the senior team in 2018 for friendly matches. He was also named for the 2018 FIFA World Cup squad. He established himself as one of the most important assets of the international team over time and was featured in all of Portugal’s matches in the 2019 UEFA Nations League and also helped the team reach the finals.

Dias was selected in the Portugal Squad for UEFA Euro 2020 and was named in the 2022 FIFA World Cup preliminary Squad. He earned his 50th cap in the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier match against Luxembourg.

Varane youth career can be considered a very prolific career due to his astonishing performance and contributed majorly in the crucial qualifiers. He was called up for the senior team in 2012 against Uruguay as an unused substitute and was also given a chance in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers held in 2013 and was included in the 2014 World Cup Squad. He majorly contributed to the International team and has been consistently performing as a strong defence mechanism for the national team.

We can see that Varane wins in this category as well and also has a far better International Career. Dias may be an asset for Portugal but it takes a lot more to edge a World Cup winner. However, we must not forget the fact that Dias is younger than Varane and has played international matches, but since this is a comparison we can clearly see Varane winning.

We can say that he belongs to Sporting background as his brother Jonathan is also a professional footballer and his sisters have also competed in Miss France 2019. The net worth of Varane is around $20 million.

Raphael Varane Vs Ruben Dias? Who is the dominant player?

It is a very complex comparison between these players as both players can be seen giving tough competition to each other in all the categories. Based on the comparison above Varane was better in a few areas while Dias also has great achievements linked to his name. However, if we consider these factors both players have been performing exceptionally well and prove themselves as one of the most important assets of the team.
