Mesut Özil or Ozil is a former German professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. 1: Schalke 04 (2006-2008)

Ozil was already a part of Schalke as he was playing with the team from his youth career days. He started his senior career with Schalke in 2005 and was deployed as a midfielder with the number 17 on his back. 



Ozil’s gameplay was already being appreciated by the seniors and colleagues as well and was also declared as the next big thing in football. There was also news out regarding his extension with the club at a €1.5 million salary but he declined the offer and decided to move to some other club as he felt the amount was not what he wanted. 

2: Werder Bremen (2008-2010)

Ozil announced his new joining Werner Bremen on 31 January 2008 at a fee of € 5 million. There were some other big clubs as well who were interested in signing Ozil but were not ready to pay very high fees. He scored his first goal against Karlsruher SC which was a header in the 33th minute. This was also his first Bundesliga goal and continued performing in all matches but unfortunately, the team could not qualify for the final and ended up in the tenth spot. Ozil helped lead the North German club at the DFB Pokal 2009 winning in a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in Berlin. On 2 September 2013, Ozil joined the English side club Arsenal. The amount of transfer wasn’t disclosed but is said to be around € 50 million which makes Ozil the most expensive German player. In the 2013-14 season, Ozil made his league game debut with Arsenal and won the match by 3-1 making an assist for Olivier Giroud. After 3 days he made his Champions League debut in a match against Marseille. In October, Ozil was again short-listed for the prestigious Ballon d’Or Award.


In the 2015-16 season, Ozil won the first friendly over Manchester United in a 3-0 home victory. In the same year, Ozil set a new record in the Premier League after becoming the first player to assist in 6 consecutive matches.

5: Fenerbahce ( 2021-2022)

On 27 January 2021, Ozil announced his move to Turkish side club Fenerbahce and decided to play with the club for the next 3.5 years, however, the fee remained undisclosed but it was reported to be around £ 4.5 million per season. He made his Super Lig debut for Fenerbahce as a substitute on 2 February in the 77th minute against Hatayspor and the team won by 2-1. His first assist for the club was on 11 May against Sivasspor and Fenerbahce finished in the third spot.



In the second season, Ozil got his recognizable jersey number which is 10, and scored his first goal for the club on 15 August against Adana Demirspor winning the match by 1-0. This was a very memorable and joyful moment for the fans as he was captaining the team as well. His first-ever European goal with Fenerbahce was in the UEFA Europa League against Eintracht Frankfurt. It was announced in March 2022 that Ozil was no longer a part of the playing squad and in July his departure from the team took place as there was mutual agreement regarding the termination of his contract with the club.


6: Istanbul Basaksehir ( 2022-2023)


Ozil was a free agent in 2022 and decided to sign a one-year deal with the Turkish-side football club Istanbul Basaksehir with an option to extend it for one more year. He played his first match with the club on 21 August 2022 against Kayserispor as a substitute in the 80th minute, which Basaksehir won by 2-0.
