Olivier Giroud is a professional French footballer who is considered as one of the best strikers to date, he is also regarded as the top scorer in France with the most number of goals for France. He made his senior international debut for France in 2011 when he was 25 years old and has earned 120 caps till now. 1. Grenoble ( 2005-08)

Olivier spent 5 years in the Grenoble U-20 team and developed himself as a footballer who could make a senior debut in the same club. In 2005 he was kept in the reserve team of the club and he scored 15 goals in 15 matches. His outstanding performance gave him a ticket into the senior club permanently where he made his debut in the 2006-07 season. He watched the first match as a substitute and made his debut against Niort in a 2-1 away defeat playing for 90 minutes. His first pro goal was on 26 February 2007 and named it as a memorable goal. 


Having a decent first season in the senior team, he performed well and played more as a team player. He finally finished his campaign with a total of 26 appearances. This was also the season where he was issued a red card for the first time.

2. FC Istres ( 2007-08)

Olivier was loaned to Istres for the 2007-08 campaign.  He was there for the Champion National which is also the third level of football in France. His journey started with Istres in the second match where he scored a goal against Laval and won the match with a 2-1 score.

He also scored back-to-back goals in the matches against Venes and Creteil. His consistency was the key to his success in the campaign as he scored a goal in almost every match he played. He scored only 4 goals in the Istres home matches and celebrated the rest of the goals in away matches.


He played up to the mark with a total goal tally of 14. Completing the campaign and his loan period as well he returned to Grenoble in hopes of getting a good amount of matches to play as the club was in Ligue 1. But he was considered as not able to play at the level of the club. This resulted in his departure from Grenoble as well with a little disappointment.

3. Tours Fc (2008-10)

In 2008, Giroud signed a 3-year contract with the Ligue 2 club Tours. Having a good relationship with the manager he was often heard thanking and paying gratitude to the manager Daniel Sanchez. His debut was in a match against Boulogne which was a 2-1 defeat in Coupe de La Liga. He scored 2 goals in the next league match and capped a 3-1 victory over Lens. He scored 5 goals in 2 matches in Coupe de France. Showing his classic performance with this club he later on scored back-to-back goals in the matches against Montpellier and Metz.

4. Montpellier (2010-12)

Officially signed his contract with Montpellier in 2010, and played his first match for the club in the UEFA Europa League. His first match was a win 1-0 win over Bordeaux and scored his first goal in a 1-0 win against Valenciennes. In November he scored match-winning goals against  Toulouse and Nice. It was surprising to see Montepellier reaching the finals of the Coupe de la Liga. Giroud was the reason for the finals qualification as in the 117th minute against PSG, he scored the match-winning goal that helped the team get a spot in the finals after the 1993-94 season. 


The star performer of the team extended his contract with Montpellier until 2014. Finishing games in class and proving himself every single league, Giroud played a major role in the success of the club after their upset years. He was also named the ‘Charm Striker’ by a French newspaper and sticking to the title he got he scored mind-blowing hat-tricks against Dijon and Sochaux. Becoming unbeatable by scoring a goal in every match he played in Coupe de France and Coupe de La Liga and also became the table toppers of the league in November 2011. In 2012 he was declared the top-scorer by League de Football.

5. Arsenal ( 2012-18) 

In June 2012 he was finally signed by Arsenal after a long race at a fee of £9.6 million (€12.4 million). It was a big move for the player as he was finally playing for a club as big as Arsenal. He scored his first goal for the club on 26 September in a 6-1 win over Coventry City. Giroud helped Arsenal for a historic comeback against Reading, where they were at 4-0 and ended up winning the match 7-5 after the extra time. Showing his class in this club as well, he secured a place in the Premier League team of the week. This was the team where he played the most number of matches and had the best stats with an incomparable form.


In March 2014 Giroud scored twice against Everton in the FA Cup Finals and scored a penalty in the semi-finals making a clear path for the team to enter the finals and Arsenal beating Hull City by 3-2 lifting the FA Cup. 6. Chelsea (2018-21)

In January 2018, Giroud signed an 18-month contract with Chelsea. A bold move by the player to sign and play for their rivals. His debut match was lost against Watford by 4-1 and the next Premier League match was a win against West Bromwich Albion. He scored his first goal in a match against Hull City which was a 4-0 win. Giroud scored a free-kick in his 500th career appearance and contributed to Chelsea’s Unbeaten Europa. 


Giroud’s extension with Chelsea took place on 20 May 2020 and a week later he scored a goal to help Chelsea reach their 14th FA Cup Final. His first appearance in the 2020-21 season was on 23 September as a benched player and scored in a 6-0 win over Barnsley in the EFL Cup. In 2021 he became the 17th player to have 100 substitute appearances.

7. AC Milan (2021- present)

Giroud joined AC Milan in the year 2021 after a permanent transfer from Chelsea and scored the first goal in a match against Cagliari resulting in a 4-1 win, This was his first goal in Serie A, and he also scored the only goal in October against Torino and initiated a 1-0 victory. Being a striker he often helped many of his teammates in scoring and proved himself as a team player too. A move to Italy was a wise decision for the player as he knows that he is ageing and is not as fast as he used to be.
