Modric is the only player in the last decade who broke the Ballon D’or domination of Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi. In terms of individual honours, Modric has a clear upper hand over Iniesta and hence, he is the winner of this category.
Luka Modric:
In Croatia’s 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign, Modrić became the new team captain, following Darijo Srna’s retirement. On 15 July 2018, Modric was awarded the Golden Ball for best player of the tournament. Modric interestingly holds the record for both the oldest and youngest goalscorer in Croatia. Although Croatia lost to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup semifinal, Modric was awarded the bronze ball for his impeccable performance.
Andrès Iniesta:
Andrès Iniesta made a strong international debut by helping his team win the UEFA European U16 championship. He was named captain several times while playing in the U21 championships for Spain. He was man of the match of the World Cup finals of 2010 which was also the first time that Spain won the World Cup. Iniesta was also chosen as the UEFA Euro 2012 Player of the Tournament. He retired from international football on 25th May 2023 and at the time of retiring was the nation’s fourth-most-capped player of all time, behind only Iker Casillas, Xavi, and Sergio Ramos.
Luka Modric:
Modric keeps a low profile when it comes to his life outside of football. His autobiography Moja igra (My Game), co-written with renowned Croatian-Italian sports writer Robert Matteoni, was published in late 2019. He also starred in the first season of Captains, a docu-series released in 2022 on Netflix.
Andrès Iniesta:
Iniesta openly talked about the depression that he faced before the 2010 FIFA World Cup as a result of his injuries and the death of Daniel Jarque. In September 2018, Iniesta alongside German footballer Lukas Podolski campaigned and donated money for the victims of the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake in Japan.
Upon looking at various aspects of the player’s respective careers, we can say that both of them have made a significant mark on the field of football and have gone down in the books as legends. It is very difficult to compare two such players who define perfection and has done so much for the beautiful sport. Iniesta has won more and bigger titles compared to Modric but when it comes to longevity Modric is still dominating the midfield of Real Madrid in 2023. When viewed in comparison, we can conclude that Modric runs slightly ahead of Iniesta and hence he stands as the winner of our comparison.
