Is Sergio Ramos the greatest defender in the history of football?

The world of defenders is difficult compared to strikers and midfielders as their dominance is not decided by goals or assists. A lot of people believe that Sergio Ramos is the Greatest Defender Of All Time. According to France Football Magazine, 68% of people voted for Sergio Ramos to be the greatest of all time.

Despite facing heavy criticism for his style of football nothing ever stopped Ramos from achieving more. The best captain in the history of Real Madrid has achieved pretty much everything for club and country. If we have to decide the goat debate based on World Cup or Champions League wins then he has won it all.

Being a defender Sergio Ramos has scored quite a lot in his career. Ramos holds the record for most goals scored by a defender in international football. Just before leaving Madrid, he made a new league record too for having the most goals scored by a defender in La Liga history. It’s difficult for strikers to bag in goals but in the case of Ramos, the story is different. 

Nobody can forget the priceless goal he scored in the Champions League final against their biggest rivals Atletico Madrid.

When it comes to defenders the team is not just looking out for someone who can stop the attack instead someone who can get the morale of the entire team high and be the leader when it matters. Undoubtedly Sergio Ramos has been the leader for Madrid and Spain marching his team to great victories which make him be considered among the greatest.

Yes! The answer to this question is complicated but given the number of achievements Ramos has completed he can be considered as the greatest ever. Not to forget that Maldini and Beckenbauer have achieved similar or more titles compared to Ramos. 

Beckenbauer has won the World Cup, Champions League and 2 Ballon D’Or in his name. He is the only defender to complete this achievement. While Maldini has more Champions League titles and is also a club legend who lifted many titles with AC Milan.
