David Gea’s life story is living proof that “where there is a will, there’s a way.” In 2012 he was diagnosed with farsightedness, he couldn’t see nearby objects. But nothing is impossible when you are dedicated and as passionate as him about your performance. He struggled to pave his way to the top but ultimately he proved himself. Gea drew inspiration from his goalkeeper father and idolised him. His journey from a young talent to Madrid’s youth academy to getting into Manchester United is an interesting tale. This article will tell you about clubs that played a crucial role in nurturing this young talent and turning him into the star he is today.

Atlético Madrid

Although De Gea joined Madrid at the age of 13 his professional football career started at the ripe age of 18 with his senior debut. He played his first debut match on 30 September 2009 as a substitute. It was his first time as a first-choice goalkeeper inside the stadium, it was like a dream coming true. Soon with his talent and skills, he established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, this talented player helped Atletico win the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup in 2010.

His consistent performances attracted the attention of Premier League clubs, especially Manchester United. The Red Devils were out in the market looking to replace their former goalkeeper.

 Manchester United

In 2011 David joined Manchester United, breaking British records with a transfer fee of £18.9 million, a huge amount for a goalkeeper in those days. His journey in the club was a shaky start, he faced criticism after his debut match. But that is the price you pay with the rise in expectations. Fans demanded more of his performances in the match. Despite early challenges he soon became Manchester’s main goalkeeper, he has made 486 appearances for Manchester United since 2011. He had been their ace goalkeeper for all these years and had won them so many matches with his brilliant goalkeeping skills and saves. His hard work and consistency made him one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

His long list of achievements includes the sweet victory in the Premier League in 2013 along with the Europa League and also English FA Cup. In 2014-2015 he saved many crucial goals against Everton, West Brom, and Chelsea that earned him recognition as the Player of the Month for October. In a memorable 3-0 win against Liverpool, he saved eight shots, securing the man of the match award. By the end of the season, he was nominated for PFA Players Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year and won the Fans Player of the Year award for the second consecutive time.

He has played a very crucial role in the success of the club for over a decade. The way he controls the penalty area, makes accurate passes, and plans attacking moves he was just not their goalkeeper but also a strategist. David’s contract expired on 1 July 2023 and he was a free agent on 8 July 2023.
