Luís Filipe Madeira Caeiro Figo is a former Portuguese professional footballer who played as a winger for the professional Portuguese team and is considered one of the greatest players of all time. Including many national, international, and club trophies, Figo is one of those legends who have several personal achievements as well. He started his career as a street footballer before joining the academy of Sporting Clube de Portugal when he was 12 years old. 

Being the only child of his parents, he was allowed to play football by his choice and this also started his journey of playing Futsal which helped him nurture his skills and become perfect in the sport. 

Regarded as one of the best in the game, and appreciated worldwide for his skills and performance, Figo was highly appreciated for his quick, elegant, highly skilful, and accelerated dribbling abilities. Apart from his appearance on the field, Figo has also appeared in many commercials for Nike and FIFA Video game series as well. Figo showed interest in the FIFA presidency but withdrew from the presidency elections after some days as he stated that he would not be given proper powers.

1. Sporting CP (1989-95)

The first club Figo played for was Sporting CP where he made his debut in the 1989 to 1990 season and his first match where he was a substitute for Marlon Brandão was a victory by 1-0 over Maritimo. In December 1991, he scored his first goal for Sporting CP against Torreense and won by 2-1. He also won his first senior international cap in 1991.

 Figo’s career was going quite well with the club and even his gameplay aged well, he also won the prestigious Under-20 World Championship Cup and the under-16 European championships with his Portuguese teammates had been together with Figo since the start of his journey. Highly appreciated and praised for his gameplay he was also named as the future of the football scene of Portugal and ending the season with Sporting CP, he finally lifted the 1994-95 Portugal Championship as well.

Sporting CP turned out to be a great club to pave his way to the top, he also learned a lot during his time with this club.

2. Barcelona (1995-2000)

In 1995, Figo wanted to join a European team with a big name and he was searching for one. But suddenly there was news coming out from the Italian clubs Juventus and Parma about their dispute because Figo had signed a contract with both of them, it was a big confusion and Figo was penalised for this. Eventually, Figo shook hands with Barcelona at a  £2.25M fee. Figo’s career in Barcelona was astonishing according to his role and lifted the 1996-97 UEFA Cup.

Considering the matches played and his stay in Barcelona as one of the most important days of his career, Figo was often heard as thankful for his journey and expressed his love for Barca at various events. 3. Real Madrid ( 2000-2005)

In July 2000, Figo came up with an announcement of his new team Real Madrid, the rivals of Barcelona. Figo’s new contract was a whopping $67M and was a new world record fee. After his signing with Real Madrid Figo became a part of the bitter rivalry between the two clubs. Figo received the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2000 in the Madrid jersey for his performance mainly in Barcelona, which made him the best globally. 

A phase arrived in Figo’s life when he was massively disrespected for his decision to move to Real Madrid and was considered the epitome of betrayal by Barca fans. Figo refused to take any corner kick that day as he was afraid of the Barcelona fans as there were continuous negative chants and throwing of bottles, lighters, and much more on the field. 

Despite all the hatred and criticism, Figo’s rise was worth watching as he lifted the La Liga title in 2001 scoring 14 goals, and was also awarded the FIFA World Player of the Year followed by the UEFA Champions League. It is still one of the most controversial transfers in the history of football. The good part is that this transfer was not a failure, he worked hard to not be one.

Figo played many matches at Camp Nou after the horrifying incident and played freely every time as things changed and fans started to respect his decision. Figo spent 5 seasons with Madrid and was also kept in the list of most successful foreign players in Real Madrid’s history.

4. Inter Milan ( 2005-2009)

As the contract with Real Madrid came to an end, Figo joined the Italian club Inter Milan in 2005 on a free transfer. Figo won the 2008-09 title and announced his retirement from football after the win. He was given a standing ovation from the fans and was given a chance to captain the match and create a memorable moment after scoring a goal in the extra time against Roma in Supercoppa Italiana.

In his emotional moment, he said that he would never leave Inter Milan and would love to work together after retirement as well. Sharing a lot of memories he made with Inter, he revealed that he never expected to spend so much time with the club. It was a magical yet sad moment for his fans to see him retire. The team went on to win the Champions League the same year which was the goodbye gift to the fans from him.

International Career Of Luis Figo:

The former Portugal star played an important role in the 2002 World Cup Qualification and was highly appreciated for it. In 2004 February, he earned his 100th cap in a match against England and was also the captain in the same match. But he announced his retirement in 2004 from international football after a huge loss in the 2004 EURO Cup but later reversed the decision and was seen playing in the 2006 World Cup Qualifiers.
