Top 5 Keepers With Most Yellow Cards In Premier League

The Premier League is an English domestic league considered one of the most competitive leagues in the world and has been rated first in terms of physical toughness so it is bound to be aggressive and challenging. Let’s look at the top 5 goalkeepers with the most yellow cards in the Premier League.

5. Tim Howard

The former United States international goalkeeper has played for several top teams in the world and also has two world cup appearances including Everton in the English Premier League. He has a total of 408 appearances in the premier league he has a total of 16 yellow cards and one direct red card in the first half against Sunderland which led to the team to a loss.

In the 2013 season, he also scored an amazing goal from 100 yards away against Bolton which made into the record of the premiership. He is an excellent keeper having over 130 clean sheets in his professional career, he was at his best during the period of the World Cup 2010 where he pulled off some excellent saves especially against England which led them to succeed in the knockout stage.

Tim Howard retired on 19th October 2019, playing for MLS side Colorado Rapids. The career he has led was remarkable and he will always be remembered by Everton fans.

4. Emiliano Martinez

The Argentinian World Cup winner and a first-team keeper of the National team and his current premier league side Aston Villa, He also played as the second-choice keeper for Arsenal and Wolves in the championship, having over 134 appearances in the premier league, he has received 16 yellow cards but luckily he hasn’t been shown a red card yet, his constant confrontation and aggression towards the opposition has overshadowed his successful career, it also led to many team not picking him after his wonderful performance in the world cup in which he won the golden glove.

Martinez is now at the end of his contract with Aston Villa and with the club searching for new young talent, let’s hope that teams overlook his notorious behaviour and focus on his talent and past performances. In the recent 2023, Balon d’Or ceremony he was nominated and won the Yashin Award for the best goalkeeper.

 3.Ederson Sanatana De Moraes

The Manchester City first-team goalkeeper who has 226 Premier League appearances and counting has been excellent for the team and his distribution has filled the gap that Pep was looking for in the squad, he has also over 106 clean sheets in his career with 19 of them coming from last year and with such an impressive career he is also not shy about confrontation and displaying violent behaviour towards his opponents earning him 17 yellow cards.

It is claimed that his history of playing as a midfielder in the early stages of his career often leads to his shenanigans, especially outside the designated goalkeeper area which has resulted in most of the disciplinary actions against him from both the team and the referees in the premier league.

2. Shay Given

The Ireland international has played for three Premier League teams namely Manchester City, Stoke City and Aston Villa, He has over 113 clean sheets in his career, known for his great ability and being highly competitive often resulting in fights earning him a record 19 yellow cards,

There are many defenders in the history of the Premier League who got fewer yellow cards than him in their entire career of playing in the League, anyways his confrontations weren’t only limited to players but also with the referees which rightfully often got him booked.

Surprisingly he also has two assists which is a lot for goalkeepers at his time, as football hadn’t transitioned tactically and keepers were merely used as a part of the defence. The aggressive attitude and behaviour blockaded his path in playing for many top Premier League teams.

1. Jussi Jääskeläinen

The Finnish international goalkeeper has an impressive career with over 436 premier league appearances playing for West Ham United, Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic, He is also the only goalkeeper who won Finnish Footballer of the Year in 2007, a big achievement for a keeper to win ahead of strikers and midfielders. In his time during the Premier League, he had 108 clean sheets and was considered the best defensive player in all the teams he played for. He is also quite infamous for being rash and constantly looking for trouble with both his opponents and referees, leading to him receiving the highest amount of yellow cards (24) which isn’t a fantastic record to bear your name.

Jussi has also played in the Indian Super league representing Atletico de Kolkata in the 2017-18 season, luckily he wasn’t given a yellow card or maybe it’s because he only played a single match. Leaving his dirty tactics aside, he was an exceptional goalkeeper with a considerable amount of talent and created an imposing presence in the defence, perhaps it was this enthusiasm and competitiveness which led to his hostile behaviour inside the pitch.
