Defenders are the unsung heroes of football. It is the defenders who are the backbone of any dominant team. They clash with opponents, fight aerial battles, make tackles and block dangerous shots. When we say defenders, we refer to both centre-backs and full-backs. Having a solid defensive line is a fundamental requirement for a strong team. 2: John Stones  (Manchester City)

John Stones is the Rolls Royce of defenders, he can play pretty much anywhere on the pitch. He is an English professional footballer who plays for Manchester City and the England National team. Winning five Premier League titles, 2 EFL Cups and a historic treble with the same club is nothing short of a crown he wears today. His journey in the club has been full of ups and downs but what has remained constant is his determination to excel.

William started playing at the age of six and signed his first contract when he was 17. 9: Kim Min-jae (Bayern Munich)

The South Korean giant, at 6 foot 2 inches guards Bayern Munich’s defenses. He isn’t just majestic but also fast, too fast for a man of his physique. He was a discovery Bayern unearthed during Napoli’s championship. The club saw in him the potential of a legend and brought him to the Bundesliga. It is incredible to think it is only his third season of professional football in Europe. He is a powerful force in the air, a fan favourite, and precise in his moves.

At 27 he has the experience of a seasoned player. He isn’t just a defender he is a legend in making who is yet to reach his full potential.

10: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

There was a time when he was the most feared defender a few years ago, he has taken a few steps back after his injury. Despite that, he keeps on giving top-level performances. Van Dijk is known for his height, strength, and aerial ability. He is also a good passer and has excellent positional sense. He started his professional career with Groningen in the Netherlands in 2011.

In January 2018, he signed for Liverpool for a world-record fee for a defender at the time (£75 million). Since then he has helped Liverpool win the Premier League, the Champions League, and many more titles. He has also been named UEFA Player of the Year and Premier League Player of the Season in 2019.
